Anthropic previews a Model Hardware Standard for its models

Anthropic announced a preview of what it calls the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), an initiative to establish benchmarks for the specialized hardware required to run its advanced AI models and to ensure optimal performance and compatibility across diverse computing infrastructure. The company frames it as a way to expand support for scientists and broaden research and application development on top of its models.

On X, Anthropic added important nuance: 'There's more to learn before we open source MHS. LLMs still lack physical intuition, having learned about the physical world from text and images.' It said the research preview will let it build more safety evaluations and strengthen protections for using AI in physical-world settings — positioning MHS as much a safety and embodiment effort as a hardware-compatibility standard.

The move fits Anthropic's broader posture this week, which included merging Claude's chat and Cowork memory systems, rolling out a Morning Brief feature, and expanding access to its Mythos 5 cybersecurity capabilities. It also lands amid intense industry focus on the hardware layer — from OpenAI's Jalapeño chip to Nvidia's dominance — making a model-maker weighing in on hardware standards notable.

Because the announcement is a preview rather than a shipped, open standard, the practical impact is unclear: there's no published spec yet, and Anthropic explicitly says more research is needed before open-sourcing it. Watch for the actual benchmark definitions, which hardware partners align to MHS, and whether the physical-world safety evaluations materialize alongside it.
