Google expands Gemini app features for AI Plus/Pro subscribers with daily digests and agents

AI Analysis

Google rolled out a batch of Gemini app upgrades aimed at AI Plus and AI Pro subscribers, leaning into proactive, agentic assistance: daily digests summarizing your calendar, to-dos and emails; topic tracking; market reports; and even weather-based outfit suggestions. The theme, echoed by new 'Information agents' rolling out to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. this summer, is Google's pitch that Search and Gemini should 'work while you sleep.'

The consumer push was paired with marketing spectacle — an AI-generated Fourth of July ad recreating the U.S. Declaration of Independence — and with infrastructure/ecosystem moves abroad: Google Cloud launched applied-AI initiatives across Africa, including a 'Digital Exchange Port' hub in South Africa's Eastern Cape, Africa's first applied AI lab in Ghana, and a South African startup accelerator cohort.

Competitively, the proactive-digest features push Gemini squarely against Apple's newly Gemini-powered Siri, Microsoft Copilot's daily briefings, and OpenAI's agentic ChatGPT. Google's advantage is its data gravity across Gmail, Calendar and Photos; the risk is privacy sensitivity around an assistant that reads your inbox to summarize it.

What to watch: how tightly the Information agents integrate across Search, whether the proactive features stay paywalled to Plus/Pro tiers, and adoption outside power users. The Africa initiatives, while smaller news, signal Google's intent to seed AI-native developer ecosystems in emerging markets ahead of rivals.
