AWS makes open-weight models generally available on Bedrock in European Sovereign Cloud

The launch brings open-weight models to Bedrock inside AWS's European Sovereign Cloud, an infrastructure isolated to meet EU data-residency and regulatory demands. European organizations in regulated sectors — finance, healthcare, government — can now run generative AI workloads with assurances that data stays within the EU and under European operational control.

Sovereignty has become a decisive AI-cloud battleground as European regulators tighten data rules and as geopolitical tension makes reliance on US-controlled infrastructure a strategic concern. AWS is racing Microsoft's sovereign-cloud efforts and European players like Mistral (which explicitly markets residency) to capture regulated European AI spend. Offering open-weight models specifically matters because it lets customers avoid sending data to proprietary API endpoints, keeping both weights and inference in-region.

The announcement complements a broad AWS enterprise-AI push this week — the CTO framed the AI moment as mirroring cloud's early days, and AWS highlighted production agentic deployments (Wood Mackenzie's APEX and MRH Trowe's self-service agents, both on Bedrock AgentCore) meeting German financial-sector compliance. The sovereign open-weight offering is the enabling infrastructure for exactly those regulated deployments. The open question is model breadth and freshness: sovereign environments often lag the latest models, so whether AWS keeps the sovereign catalog current with frontier open weights will determine if European enterprises accept a capability trade-off for compliance.
