Amodei publishes 'Pace the Frontier' plan; Altman, Musk, Nadella back it within hours

Dario Amodei published a roughly 3,500-word essay, 'We Must Pace the Frontier,' arguing the AI industry should deliberately slow model development and laying out a three-step framework: embedded independent evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to labs; cross-lab safety coordination; and international cooperation. Anthropic committed unilaterally to the first step, pledging to give third-party evaluators employee-level access to its systems. Amodei's post drew 87,680 likes and 16,045 retweets.

The response was unusually swift and cross-industry. Sam Altman said pacing the frontier had been 'a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks' and committed OpenAI to independent evaluators with employee-like access. Satya Nadella and Elon Musk publicly backed the plan within hours, and Hugging Face's Clément Delangue launched an Open Alignment Initiative explicitly asking to join the evaluator program. Andrej Karpathy posted, 'I love this and really hope we can come together as an industry and make it happen.'

Skeptics were equally quick. Keras creator François Chollet said he hoped the proposals stemmed from 'genuine concern for safety' rather than 'a strategic effort to consolidate power and permanently solidify the market dominance of a few top players' — a suspicion echoed on r/artificial ('Are AI CEOs calling for a slowdown out of genuine concern or is it a money thing?'). Yann LeCun mocked Amodei, recalling his 2019 claim that GPT-2 was too dangerous to open-source.

What to watch: whether the embedded-evaluator commitments produce real, verifiable access; whether smaller and open-weight labs view the framework as safety or as incumbent moat-building; and how it interacts with the same week's contradictory signals — the RubyGems agent attack and DeepMind's RSI push.
