AWS Introduces Agentic Resource Discovery Open Spec and Agent Registry

AWS introduced Agentic Resource Discovery (ARD), an open specification for how agents, tools, and skills advertise and discover one another across environments, paired with a new Agent Registry that acts as a centralized, searchable catalog. Together they aim to solve a growing problem in agentic systems: as organizations deploy dozens or hundreds of agents and tools, discovering what exists and governing access becomes unmanageable.

The Agent Registry provides a governed inventory—teams can register agents, tools, and skills, then search and permission them centrally. ARD, as an open spec, is designed to enable discovery across heterogeneous environments rather than locking discovery into a single vendor's platform, an approach that could encourage third-party adoption.

The launch is part of AWS's coordinated agentic push this week, which also included AgentCore payments reaching GA and the Grok 4.6 Bedrock addition. Strategically, owning the discovery-and-governance layer positions AWS to be the control plane for enterprise agent fleets, competing with Google's Managed Agents and Microsoft Foundry's orchestration tooling.

Publishing ARD as an open specification is a bid to make it a de facto standard rather than a proprietary AWS feature—echoing how MCP (Model Context Protocol) gained cross-vendor traction. Success depends on other platforms and tool vendors implementing it.
