xAI launches Data Bot, a shared analytics agent inside Grok Bot

AI Analysis

xAI released Data Bot on November 2. It is a 'Shared Bot' within Grok Bot, xAI's always-on AI-teammate product. SpaceXSI's data-science team built it because the team had become a bottleneck for colleagues whose simple questions still needed specialist knowledge.

The data team maintains a shared set of skills that every user gets. Metric definitions cover active users and revenue, along with source tables and query logic. Investigation playbooks break spikes down by segment and region and check for holidays or logging changes. Experiment guidance covers A/B setup, power analysis and readouts, and chart conventions are included. Charts made in chat can become Databricks or Hex dashboards. Shared memory stores operational facts, such as who owns a given pipeline, but managers must approve each addition before it reaches all users.

The approach is to encode a team's expertise in a governed agent rather than in documentation. It competes with Microsoft's Copilot harness in Foundry and with the analytics agents built on AWS AgentCore.

The caveat is cost. On r/artificial, users reported Grok Bot exhausting a week of usage overnight, and Elon Musk said the agent was costing too much. Separately, xAI will watermark Grok API text output starting November 7.
