Microsoft signs multibillion-dollar deal to fund Mistral's European AI expansion

Reuters, SiliconAngle and PYMNTS reported the deal as a multibillion-dollar commitment to scale Mistral's compute capacity in Europe while deepening its integration across Microsoft's stack. Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 are now in Microsoft Foundry, Medium 3.5 is in Copilot Studio, and Azure Local supports Mistral's open models — giving enterprises flexible on-prem, sovereign-cloud and hyperscaler deployment options.

Both CEOs pushed the message personally. Arthur Mensch said the commitment accelerates construction of Mistral's AI infrastructure, and Satya Nadella framed it as "bringing customers more choice in how and where they deploy AI." The 'control' framing — data residency, regulated industries, sovereign deployment — is Mistral's core differentiation, and Forbes this week held Mistral up as the template for non-Chinese, non-American open-weight labs, noting it made over $200M last year selling open models on exactly that neutrality pitch.

Strategically, the deal hedges Microsoft's heavy OpenAI dependence and plants European compute at a moment when sovereignty and Chinese-model anxiety dominate policy debates. Mistral also confirmed an open-weight model launching this summer, keeping one foot in the open ecosystem even as it takes hyperscaler money.
