WhatsApp Web adds calling, call transfer, and noise suppression

Meta rolled out a set of real-time communication features to WhatsApp Web: the ability to place and receive calls directly from the desktop web client, call transfer to move an active call between devices, and background noise suppression to clean up audio on calls. Collectively they push the browser-based WhatsApp experience toward parity with the mobile app for voice and video.
While modest next to frontier-model launches, the update is a reminder that Meta's AI investment increasingly shows up as invisible infrastructure — the noise-suppression feature is an on-device audio model, not a chatbot. It's the same pattern behind Meta's other consumer moves this week: a Facebook Marketplace Seller App that uses Llama 4 for photo-to-listing generation, replacing Meta's older DeepText/Lumos dual-system architecture.
Strategically, WhatsApp remains one of Meta's largest surfaces for eventually distributing Meta AI's agentic capabilities. Meta AI itself recently gained the ability to 'act' — completing multi-step tasks and producing finished spreadsheets, presentations, and documents across apps — and WhatsApp is a natural channel for those agents to reach billions of users. Desktop calling and call transfer expand the surface where that could land.
