AWS European Sovereign Cloud will run disconnected from global backbone on October 24

AWS announced a public demonstration of operational independence for its European Sovereign Cloud. On October 24, 2026, it will run the region for several hours with no connection to the AWS Global Network backbone. The goal is to prove that the sovereign cloud can keep operating without relying on any infrastructure outside the European Union, which is the core promise AWS has made to EU governments and regulated industries.

The exercise tests the dependencies that usually stay hidden:

- monitoring;

- software update pipelines.

Many cloud services quietly rely on global endpoints, so a disconnected run is a stronger claim than data-residency guarantees alone. AWS's security blog frames it as demonstrating that operations, personnel and infrastructure are all EU-contained.

Competitive pressure explains the move. European sovereignty concerns have intensified, and local challengers are building their pitch on independence from U.S. providers. Mistral, freshly funded with €3 billion and opening a Munich hub, positions itself as sovereign AI, and Microsoft and Google offer their own sovereign-cloud variants and partnerships. A live disconnection test is a concrete, verifiable differentiator in a market often driven by marketing language.

The skeptics' questions:

- Several hours is not the same as indefinite independence.

- Legal exposure to U.S. jurisdiction, such as the CLOUD Act, is a separate issue that no technical test resolves.
