Microsoft Copilot's August update adds Power BI reasoning and Outlook drafting

Microsoft detailed a broad set of August 2026 updates to Microsoft Copilot spanning end-user features and IT administration. Notable additions include enhanced reasoning over Power BI reports, dynamic answer cards for various content types, and the ability to regenerate a response without restarting a conversation. Mobile users can now generate Outlook email drafts directly within Copilot Chat, and Copilot Notebooks now offers both a lightweight workspace and a fuller OneNote-backed experience.

Mechanically, the Power BI reasoning is the most consequential piece: letting Copilot reason over structured business-intelligence data (rather than just summarizing documents) pushes the assistant toward analytical workflows where accuracy and grounding matter. The response-regeneration and answer-card changes are UX refinements that reduce friction in daily use.

On the admin side, new IT capabilities — custom report creation and surfacing GitHub Copilot AI Credit usage in dashboards — are set to arrive in September, giving enterprises finer control over consumption and governance as Copilot seats scale. Microsoft reported more than 30 million paid Copilot seats this quarter, so per-seat cost visibility is increasingly a purchasing concern.

Competitively, the update keeps Copilot's core value proposition — deep integration across Outlook, Teams, Power BI and the Office estate — ahead of standalone assistants that lack that data gravity. What to watch: whether the Power BI reasoning is reliable enough for finance and ops teams to trust, and how the September admin tooling handles credit-based billing as agentic features consume more compute.
