DeepSeek suffers 5-hour API outage and offers refund credits

A partial outage took down DeepSeek's chat service and its V4 Pro and V4.1 Flash APIs for roughly five hours. DeepSeek implemented a fix and is offering compensation credits covering usage from October 8 to 14. It has not given a root cause.
Users were not surprised. An r/DeepSeek post titled 'DeepSeek on vacation, again' captured the frustration of developers who rely on its cheap per-token pricing.
The reliability gap matters because DeepSeek's whole pitch is price-performance. Its V4.1 architecture reports 90.9 on GPQA Diamond and outscores Mistral Large 4 on Artificial Analysis. But production teams weigh uptime as heavily as benchmarks, and the 'best model race is over' argument puts reliability at the center.
Watch whether DeepSeek publishes a post-mortem, and whether the outage affects the funding round it reportedly has under way.
