xAI Ships Grok 4.6 and Grok Imagine Image 2.0; SpaceX Acquires xAI

xAI released Grok Imagine Image 2.0 as its new Quality Mode across web, iOS, and Android, adding region-level editing tools (Magic Wand, Segmentation, Smart Resize), multi-image reference inputs, improved text rendering, and workflow templates. The model now ranks second globally in text-to-image generation and image editing on major AI leaderboards, behind OpenAI's gpt-image-2. Elon Musk also announced Grok Build V1.0 with UI, navigation, and reliability upgrades.

On the model side, xAI shipped Grok 4.6, a 1.5-trillion-parameter frontier model improved via enhanced supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. Musk teased Grok 4.7 to follow, with compute bound to Nvidia GPUs.

The most audacious news came from SpaceX's earnings call: SpaceX announced it acquired xAI to form a vertically integrated engine, jointly developing Starmind AI1 — a satellite carrying Nvidia Rubin GPUs, with prototypes launching in early 2027. The vision is orbital AI data centers, pitched as a way to escape terrestrial power and cooling constraints.

Developers were split: some found the SpaceX-xAI merger and orbital-compute concept architecturally impressive, while many were skeptical about latency, radiation hardening, and practicality of running inference from space. The image-model progress is concrete and shippable; the Starmind vision is a long-horizon bet. Competitively, ranking #2 in image generation puts xAI credibly ahead of most rivals but still chasing OpenAI, while a 1.5T Grok 4.6 keeps it in the frontier-model conversation alongside Qwen3.8-Max and Opus 5.
