China clears Alibaba's Qwen models for iPhone Duo, opening Apple Intelligence's path

AI Analysis

Apple needs a local partner to ship generative AI in China, where foreign models require approval. MIIT's sign-off on Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen (Qwen) for text and Tongyi Wanxiang for images makes Alibaba the backbone of Apple Intelligence there. Mark Gurman reports a December launch via iOS 27.3.

For Alibaba it is a major distribution win, putting Qwen in front of one of the most valuable smartphone user bases. Alibaba is simultaneously pushing into hardware with Qwen Glasses N1, starting at 2,999 yuan (~$450), and Qwen Clip earbuds co-developed with Bose. It also open-sourced QwenGyre, a reinforcement-learning framework for long-running agents, while training the Qwen 4 series.

The deal matters competitively as Apple's China sales face pressure from Huawei and Xiaomi, whose phones already ship with domestic AI. A credible Apple Intelligence offering could help Apple stabilize share.

Watch for which features launch first, data-handling arrangements, and whether US policymakers object to the partnership.
