xAI's Grok 4.6 Now Available in Amazon Bedrock

AWS added xAI's Grok 4.6 to Amazon Bedrock as a frontier model for long-running agents, coding, and knowledge work. The model offers a 500K-token context window and four configurable reasoning effort levels, running on the bedrock-mantle and bedrock-runtime endpoints with Converse API and cross-Region inference support. It is the second xAI model to join Bedrock's catalog.

The integration extends Bedrock's multi-model strategy: developers get access to xAI's frontier capabilities through the same unified APIs, security controls, and governance layer they already use for Anthropic, Meta, Alibaba (via Kimi/Qwen), and Amazon's own models. The four-level reasoning-effort configurability is notable for cost control — teams can dial down compute for simpler tasks and up for complex agentic chains, matching spend to workload.

The timing is significant given xAI's simultaneous push into GitHub Copilot with Grok 4.7 and its aggressive pricing strategy. By making Grok available on Bedrock, AWS gives enterprise customers a governed on-ramp to xAI models without direct xAI contracts, while xAI gains distribution through AWS's enterprise footprint. For AWS, it reinforces the neutral-platform positioning: Bedrock wins regardless of which frontier lab leads, because it hosts them all. The 500K context window puts Grok 4.6 in competitive range with other long-context frontier models for document-heavy and multi-step agentic workloads, though enterprises will weigh it against the newer Grok 4.7's coding gains now that both are in the ecosystem.
