Samsung co-leads Mistral's Series D and deploys on-premises Mistral Large for chip manufacturing

Samsung Electronics unveiled a partnership with Mistral AI to build customized on-premises AI models across its semiconductor engineering and manufacturing operations, built on Mistral Large as the foundation. Announced at the Korea-France summit in Paris, the deal pairs a commercial deployment with a strategic equity stake: Samsung co-led Mistral's Series D funding round. Reporting elsewhere pegged the round at €3 billion at a €21 billion valuation, described as Europe's largest tech funding round.

The use case is specific and high-value: defect detection and equipment/yield optimization in chip fabs, where even marginal yield improvements translate to enormous revenue. Critically, Samsung is running the models on-premises to keep proprietary process data internal — a requirement in an industry where manufacturing know-how is among the most closely guarded IP. That data-sovereignty framing is exactly Mistral's differentiated pitch versus US hyperscaler models.

The partnership deepens a European-Korean axis in AI infrastructure and gives Mistral both a marquee industrial reference customer and a major strategic investor. Mistral separately used its official X account (4,500+ likes) to deny a claim of unauthorized access to its systems, saying an investigation found no evidence of compromise — a reminder that the lab is operating under heightened scrutiny as its profile rises.
