xAI Ships Grok 4.7 to Public API at $2/$6 per 1M Tokens

Grok 4.7's public API release is a developer-facing event with an unusually high breakage surface. Priced at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, the model carries a 500,000-token context window — large enough that xAI has begun pitching it for extended-history workloads, including the finance-management capability Elon Musk has touted for Grok connecting to bank accounts, credit cards, and investment portfolios.
The friction is in the migration. According to tech-insider's setup writeup, xAI shifted pricing, the context window, and reasoning controls enough between 4.5/4.6 and 4.7 that teams who haven't updated their integrations are seeing failures. Compounding the confusion, the documentation was rebranded to 'SpaceXAI Docs' and moved under docs.x.ai — a cosmetic change that nonetheless disoriented teams looking for familiar endpoints.
Underneath the API launch sits xAI's aggressive infrastructure build (covered separately): the Colossus 2 cluster in Memphis is the compute engine behind Grok's rapid version cadence. The 4.7 release continues xAI's pattern of frequent, integration-breaking increments — a strategy that keeps the model competitive on paper but taxes the developers who have to keep pace.
What to watch: whether the finance-management features, which connect Grok directly to sensitive accounts, draw the same containment scrutiny now aimed at OpenAI's agents. Handing an autonomous model write-access to a user's money is precisely the risk profile regulators are circling this week, and xAI has historically shipped first and hardened later.
