Itaú rolls out OpenAI-powered generative AI to its entire customer base

AI Analysis

Itaú Unibanco, Latin America's largest private bank, has built generative AI for its entire customer base with OpenAI. Two systems sit at the core. ia.i is the customer-facing conversational interface. IARA is an internal governance platform that controls how AI is deployed, monitored and audited across the bank. The rollout covers both retail customers and employees.

The governance layer is the important part. Brazilian banking regulation is strict on customer data, explainability and consumer protection, so a bank-wide deployment depends on audit trails and policy enforcement more than on model capability. By pairing a front-end assistant with a dedicated governance platform, Itaú is treating AI as regulated infrastructure rather than a pilot, a pattern other large banks are watching.

OpenAI published several enterprise case studies the same day. Stack Overflow for Agents was shipped by two engineers in a few weeks using Codex, and its ChatGPT plugin helped drive up to 10x growth in agent creation and tripled signups. Credit firm Benefit Street Partners uses Codex to build loan-valuation and credit-agreement analysis tools. Together they support OpenAI's enterprise pitch heading into Microsoft's earnings, where more than 30 million paid Copilot seats are expected.

Caveats: these are vendor-published case studies with no independent metrics on accuracy, cost savings or customer satisfaction. For Itaú, the real tests are regulatory scrutiny and error rates in production, neither of which a launch post can show.
