OpenAI adds visual ad formats and measurement partners to ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI is building out ChatGPT Ads into a fuller performance-marketing product. The update adds visual ad formats beyond text placements, a redesigned conversions page for tracking outcomes, automated performance emails, a set of third-party measurement partners, and a system for advertisers to report bugs and give feedback.
Measurement partners are the most consequential addition. Advertisers commit serious budgets only when third parties can verify performance. Independent attribution moves ChatGPT closer to the standards set by Google Search and Meta. Visual formats raise the revenue ceiling per placement and make the channel usable for brand advertisers, not just direct-response buyers.
Marketers are now weighing ChatGPT as a performance channel alongside Google Search, with which it competes directly for intent-driven queries. For OpenAI, ads diversify revenue beyond subscriptions and API usage as it funds enormous compute commitments.
The timing carries risk. The same day, at least eight US states sued OpenAI over ChatGPT safety under consumer-protection laws, and advertising-supported products tend to attract tougher regulatory scrutiny. Users and critics also worry about how ads affect answer neutrality, an issue sharpened by the Hacker News discussion of "publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs". Watch for disclosures on how ads are separated from model responses.
