Samsung posts record 107.4 trillion won operating profit on AI memory demand

AI Analysis

Samsung Electronics reported record third-quarter operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, roughly $80.5B, up 783% from a year earlier. Demand for high-bandwidth memory, server DRAM and data-center SSDs drove the jump, and the company expects HBM to remain sold out through 2027.

The result shows where AI money is flowing. Every frontier model and inference cluster needs HBM stacked next to accelerators, and supply has lagged demand for two years. Memory makers with HBM capacity are now among the biggest winners of the AI build-out, alongside NVIDIA and the hyperscalers.

It fits the week's earnings theme. AWS grew 39%, Azure 48%, and both said demand outstrips supply. Samsung's numbers confirm the bottleneck sits partly in memory, which is why capex keeps rising and why investors watch whether pricing power holds.

Samsung also said it is working with Mistral AI on models specialized for semiconductor design and manufacturing, and it continues pivoting away from training its own Gauss foundation models toward partner models and SmartThings agent automation. The caveat for investors is cyclicality: memory has historically boomed and crashed, and new HBM capacity from rivals could ease prices once it comes online.
