Microsoft and Mistral strike multibillion-dollar deal to build European AI infrastructure

Microsoft committed a multibillion-dollar investment to expand Azure's computing infrastructure in Europe in partnership with Mistral AI, built on thousands of NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. The deal integrates Mistral Medium 3.5 (open-weight) and Mistral OCR 4 (proprietary) into Microsoft Foundry, with Medium 3.5 also in Copilot Studio, enabling frontier-model deployment across both cloud-connected and fully disconnected enterprise environments.

The strategic thrust is European AI sovereignty: the partnership targets regulated industries that need to keep data and operations under local control while accessing frontier models. It gives European enterprises flexible deployment options and positions Mistral as the sovereign-AI champion backed by Microsoft's capital and infrastructure.

For Microsoft, the deal diversifies its model portfolio beyond OpenAI and its own MAI models, and deepens its European footprint amid intensifying data-sovereignty regulation. The Vera Rubin GPU commitment also reinforces NVIDIA's central role in the European buildout. Skeptics may question how 'sovereign' an arrangement anchored by a US hyperscaler truly is, and whether Mistral's open-weight Medium 3.5 can compete on quality with Opus 5 and GPT-5.6.
