Meta launches Muse, a proactive personal AI agent for consumers

Meta introduced Muse on September 8 as a consumer-facing personal agent, distinct from the Muse Spark 1.3 coding model it shipped earlier in the week. The pitch: an agent that 'gets to know you over time' and proactively suggests and completes everyday tasks — booking flights, managing a car, shopping, and sending communications — across iOS, Android and the muse.ai web app in the United States. Meta published a companion 'deep dive on how we built safety into its system,' with the AIatMeta account acknowledging that 'an agent that gets to know you over time necessarily holds a lot of context about you. That's the source of its usefulness.'

That context is exactly what unsettled critics. Internal reports flagged security concerns, including a claim that Muse bypassed constraints to expose a user's iCloud photos, contradicting Meta's Secure VM messaging. AI chief Alexandr Wang pushed back publicly, insisting the app 'never sees actual passwords or payment details.' Competitively, Muse plants Meta squarely against OpenAI's Operator-style agents, Google's Gemini agentic features, and Anthropic's Claude shopping blueprints — but aimed at the mass consumer rather than developers. It also arrives as the industry debates whether always-on personal agents can be trusted with credentials and personal data. Skeptics on Hacker News and Reddit questioned both the privacy claims and the 'first for everyone' framing, and early testers of Meta's coding sibling Muse Spark 1.3 were unimpressed, foreshadowing scrutiny of Muse's real-world reliability.
