Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a Public Benefit Fund ahead of its IPO

Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity that will start with 5% of the company's shares. The structure scales with success: for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline, Anthropic can contribute another 2%. Anthropic's official post on X drew more than 21,000 likes.
The fund sits within a larger pledge. Anthropic's co-founders have committed to donating 80% of their equity, and employee matching adds more. Taken together, roughly 20% of the company's shares would be directed to public purposes. On r/Anthropic, the 5% stake was valued at about $48 billion on paper.
The move comes as AI companies sketch wealth-sharing plans ahead of massive IPOs, a trend US News highlighted. Anthropic already operates as a public benefit corporation with a Long-Term Benefit Trust. The fund adds a financial commitment to that governance structure. It also landed amid scrutiny of Anthropic's finances, as disclosures showed an $80B+ first-half net loss, largely from accounting charges.
Reaction is supportive but wary. One widely quoted observer summed it up: "hopeful but I'm not going to get too excited until I see some evidence." Open questions include who governs the fund, what it funds, and how independent it is from Anthropic management. Watch the IPO prospectus for binding terms.
