Anthropic has landed two of the most significant hires in AI: Noam Shazeer, co-author of "Attention Is All You Need" and a Gemini co-lead, and John Jumper, the DeepMind VP who won a Nobel Prize for AlphaFold. Reports indicate two more senior Gemini researchers departed within a six-day window, bringing the total to at least six prominent AI researchers leaving Google DeepMind since early 2026, with moves to rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic.

The financial signal has been stark. Alphabet's market capitalization reportedly fell between $269 billion and $320 billion over the week as investors digested doubts about Google's ability to retain frontier talent despite its formidable infrastructure advantages. Google separately capped Meta's Gemini access over an industry-wide compute shortage and signed a roughly $1 billion-per-month GPU deal with SpaceX — moves that underscore resource constraints across major labs.

Competitively, the departures concentrate momentum at Anthropic just as it launches Sonnet 5 and races toward an IPO. Protein-folding and multimodal expertise flowing to Anthropic dovetails with its new Claude Science workbench, suggesting the hires are strategic rather than opportunistic.
