Alibaba's Qwen becomes Apple Intelligence backbone in China, beta lands November 4

Xinhua first reported the deal on October 31. It is the first time a major global consumer hardware maker has adopted a Chinese LLM as its primary system-level AI backbone in the Chinese market, according to Wang Xiaojie of the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu framed it as bringing new AI-powered services to Chinese users.
Mechanically, the integration covers three features:
- **Siri** query comprehension.
- **Writing Tools**: rewrite, proofread and summarize.
- **Visual Intelligence**: camera-based lookup.
It only activates on compatible iPhones where both the device location and the Apple Account region are set to China. Users choose whether to enable it and what to share. Alibaba has committed that user requests and generated outputs will not be retained for training. AppleInsider notes the China beta excludes the newer Siri features announced at WWDC 2026.
For Apple, this ends a roughly two-year gap: Apple Intelligence shipped elsewhere in 2024 but stalled in China for lack of a locally compliant model partner. It mirrors Apple's model-agnostic approach in other markets, where third-party frontier models sit behind Apple's own UX. For Alibaba, it is a huge distribution win for Qwen, already the most-forked open model family, and a signal to other device makers.
What to watch:
- How much of the experience runs on-device versus in Alibaba's cloud.
- Whether Apple discloses the privacy architecture (Private Cloud Compute equivalents) for China.
- How US policymakers react to Apple standardizing on a Chinese model, even regionally.
- Whether the December launch date holds.
