Apple enables Alibaba Qwen integration with Siri and Writing Tools in China

Apple published a guide for eligible Mac users in mainland China to connect Alibaba's Qwen AI service to Apple Intelligence features, specifically Siri and Writing Tools. Users running macOS 26.6 or later can opt in to receive more detailed responses, including photo and document analysis powered by Qwen. Alibaba says the integration will eventually extend across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro for the Chinese market.

The move is a first-ever Apple-Alibaba AI partnership and reflects the regulatory reality that Apple cannot deploy its own or Western cloud AI models in China without a licensed local partner. By routing Apple Intelligence's more demanding queries through Qwen domestically, Apple sidesteps China's AI content rules while still shipping a competitive assistant experience to one of its largest markets.

The integration lands the same week as broader Apple Intelligence progress: iOS 27 beta 5 introduced a major Siri upgrade with Visual Intelligence, a Camera app Siri mode, and improvements across Photos, Safari, Passwords, Mail, Messages, and Phone. Together they suggest Apple is finally accelerating an assistant strategy that has lagged rivals.

Competitively, the Qwen deal gives Alibaba a marquee validation and prime placement on hundreds of millions of Chinese Apple devices, a major distribution win. Skeptics note the arrangement deepens Apple's dependence on a Chinese partner and raises data-governance questions about what flows through Qwen.
