China clears Alibaba's Qwen to power Apple Intelligence on mainland iPhones

The regulatory approval ends years of uncertainty about how Apple could ship AI in China. Alibaba's Qwen language models and Tongyi Wanxiang image models will supply localized writing assistance, photo cleanup and translation.
The timing is disputed. One report says the rollout begins in late October, while Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the first features arrive in December via iOS 27.3. Both agree that the Siri AI features are excluded, and executives doubt they will reach China soon.
For Alibaba, the deal is a major distribution win. It comes alongside a wider Qwen push: the Qwen Glasses N1 wearables, the open-source QwenGyre framework for training long-running agents, and CEO Eddie Wu's stated plan for a 5-10T-parameter model.
