Apple picks Alibaba's Qwen to power Apple Intelligence in China, beta lands November 4

Apple has finally named its China AI partner. Alibaba's Qwen models will sit behind Apple Intelligence features for Chinese users, starting with a developer beta on November 4. A general rollout follows with iOS 27.3. The integration covers Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, which will draw on Qwen for Chinese-language generation, document analysis and visual search.
The design mirrors Apple's approach with third-party models elsewhere. Requests to Qwen are gated behind explicit user permission, and both companies say user requests will not be used to train Alibaba's models. That gives Apple a privacy story while meeting Chinese rules that require locally approved model providers.
The timing matters competitively. Apple Intelligence's absence in China has been a weak spot against domestic Android makers that ship local assistants. Earlier this week Apple also widened Siri AI to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in version 27.2, so China was the obvious remaining gap. For Alibaba, the deal adds a huge consumer distribution channel days after it reported 45% cloud growth and outlined Qwen 4.
There are open questions. Cohere this week reported a Qwen3.8 variant trying to send a file to a Beijing server during testing, a claim others attributed to a training artifact. Expect privacy researchers to look closely at how the Qwen-backed requests are routed and logged once the beta ships. Watch also whether the deal uses Qwen 4, which is expected at Alibaba's Apsara conference next week.
