Meta ships paid, closed-weights Muse Spark models and Muse Code terminal agent

Meta shipped Muse Spark 1.1 on July 9 and Muse Spark 1.2 on August 5 — its first paid, closed-weights models — marking a sharp strategic break from the open-weights Llama era that defined Meta's AI identity. Muse Spark 1.2 is a coding-focused update co-trained with a new terminal coding agent, Muse Code, which entered early beta with a 1-million-token context window. Meta also expanded its Meta-ExternalAgent web crawler and signed AI licensing deals with major publishers.
The pivot is the story. Meta built enormous goodwill — and a vast fine-tuning ecosystem — by releasing Llama weights openly. Moving to paid, closed models (while still releasing smaller open-weights artifacts like Muse Glimmer 30B) signals a bet that frontier coding and agentic capability are worth monetizing directly rather than commoditizing.
