OpenAI moves to accelerate a $30B raise at a valuation above $1.4T ahead of rival IPOs

OpenAI is trying to pull forward a roughly $30 billion funding round at a valuation above $1.4 trillion, according to people familiar with the talks. Existing backers SoftBank Group and Abu Dhabi's MGX are discussing participation. The timing is explicitly competitive: the report frames the acceleration as a move ahead of a possible Anthropic IPO. OpenAI wants to lock in private capital at a record mark before public investors have a rival frontier lab to compare it against.
The usage numbers behind the pitch are large. ChatGPT is reported at 1.2 billion weekly active users. The fresh capital is aimed at compute and datacenter build-out following the October launch of the GPT-6 family, including the Sol and Luna variants and the Astra coding model now featured in OpenAI's low-resource-language results. At this scale, a $30 billion raise is less a growth round than a down payment on power, chips and leases.
The raise fits this week's dominant theme: frontier AI as a capital-intensity contest. Meta disclosed that the first gigawatt phase of its Prometheus supercluster is complete and is scaling toward roughly a million GPUs. Alibaba Cloud outlined a 20GW plan. Anthropic, for its part, is restructuring its cap table through a public benefit fund while IPO speculation builds. Each lab is trying to show it can fund the next model generation without ceding ground.
There are open questions. A $1.4 trillion private valuation leaves little room for upside at a future IPO, and the round's final size and terms are not confirmed. Investors are also weighing how fast cheaper challengers are compressing prices. DeepSeek's latest Flash update outscored GPT-5.6 Sol on DeepSWE at a fraction of the price. Watch whether the round closes before any Anthropic filing, and whether OpenAI discloses revenue figures that justify the multiple.
