Mistral closes record €3B Series D led by Samsung at €21B+ valuation
Announced on Mistral's own site, the round represents roughly an 80% valuation increase over the past year, three years after the company's founding. Samsung's lead position deepens its European AI commitment and positions it as both a chip supplier and foundry partner for Mistral's compute needs. The syndicate — spanning Europe, Asia and North America — reads as a strategic endorsement of a sovereign, open-weight alternative to US labs.
Mistral frames the raise around a thesis shift: the first wave of generative AI asked who could build the most powerful model; organizations now ask how to harness AI without surrendering control of infrastructure and the 'intelligence loop.' Mistral pitches itself as the only company building the full stack — open-weight models, the infrastructure and compute they run on, and the products that put them into production — so customers avoid lock-in on roadmap, pricing or availability. It now operates across 20 countries and supports 125+ enterprises including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.
The capital funds frontier research, expanded compute for training, and commercial growth. It pairs with Mistral's enterprise push, including a nine-figure Cloudera partnership (a separate story) to run governed AI on-premises. Competitively, Mistral is carving the 'sovereignty' lane against OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, betting that European and government buyers will pay for data residency, controllability and auditability.
Caveats: €21B is rich for a company whose models trail the very top of US benchmarks, and 'sovereign AI' demand remains partly a policy bet. The Samsung tie also raises questions about chip-supply dependencies. Watch how the compute buildout translates into a frontier model that closes the capability gap.
