Meta hit with lawsuit alleging AI targeted disabled workers in layoffs

Meta faces a legal and reputational cluster around its AI use. Twenty-six current and former employees filed a lawsuit alleging that Meta deployed AI-powered software in its layoff process that disproportionately targeted workers with disabilities or those on medical leave — a claim that, if substantiated, raises serious discrimination and algorithmic-accountability questions for AI-assisted HR decisions.
The suit lands amid a broader industry debate about AI reliability in people decisions: a separate benchmark study of seven models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and xAI across 84 employee-listening tasks found AI reliable for objective work but unreliable for interpretation and synthesis in HR evaluations.
