Amazon scales back Nova AI models as Premier nears end of life

Amazon is scaling back development on several of its first-party Nova AI models, including Nova Premier, Nova Canvas, and Nova Reel, all of which are scheduled to reach end-of-life in September 2026. The models are being reclassified as Legacy: new customers are denied access and existing users face limitations. Amazon is redirecting resources toward a new frontier-model effort, reportedly staffing a dedicated research team.

The retreat is a candid acknowledgment that Amazon's in-house models never achieved frontier competitiveness against OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. It also dovetails precisely with Andy Jassy's Q2 message that AWS can win through platform breadth — hosting rivals' best models on Bedrock — rather than owning the single best model itself. Deprecating Nova while touting Bedrock's expanding third-party catalogue is that strategy made concrete.

The timing, the same week as the strong AWS Q2 print, suggests Amazon is comfortable conceding the first-party model race while its cloud-hosting economics thrive. The new frontier-research team signals it hasn't abandoned ambitions entirely, but rather is resetting after the Nova line underdelivered.

The caveat for customers is disruption: teams that built on Nova Premier, Canvas, or Reel must migrate before September, and 'Legacy' classification with access limits creates real switching costs.
