OpenAI GPT-5.6 models reach Amazon Bedrock in Australia via cross-Region inference

AWS has extended OpenAI GPT-5.6 access to Australian customers on Amazon Bedrock through global cross-Region inference, routing from the Sydney and Melbourne Regions. The move gives local teams low-latency access to GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna while keeping request routing and governance within AWS's regional framework — important for data-residency-conscious Australian enterprises and public-sector buyers.

The integration ships with production-grade tooling: prompt caching to cut repeated-context costs, Codex support with OIDC authentication for secure developer workflows, and CloudWatch usage monitoring for observability and cost control. Cross-region inference routing lets AWS balance capacity globally while presenting a regional endpoint, a pattern it also applies to Grok 4.6 on Bedrock.

The Australian expansion is a smaller but strategically consistent piece of AWS's multi-model, multi-region Bedrock strategy this week — following GovCloud aggregation and the Web Search GovCloud launch. Regional availability of frontier OpenAI models is a competitive lever against Azure and Google Cloud in the Asia-Pacific market, where enterprises increasingly demand both frontier capability and local data handling.
