OpenAI to Wind Down Model Contract With Cursor After SpaceX Acquisition

In an official post and an X statement, OpenAI said it is terminating the arrangement that let Cursor route requests to OpenAI models, citing Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX. Under OpenAI's proposal, Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models would end on November 12, giving developers a roughly ten-week transition window.

The backdrop matters: SpaceX/xAI has been aggressively building out its developer stack, shipping Grok 4.5 and 4.6 and raising $20B in fresh funding. Bringing Cursor in-house gives xAI a flagship coding surface to showcase Grok, and OpenAI has little incentive to power a direct competitor's product. OpenAI acknowledged the people 'most affected' are developers who rely on its models inside Cursor, and said it cares about easing the transition.

Cursor users betting on GPT-family models must now evaluate Grok 4.6, Claude, or Gemini 3.7 Flash — the latter of which developers already praise for production-code value at $0.75 per million input tokens.
