Volkswagen scales Microsoft Copilot to 330,000 employees ahead of Microsoft earnings

Volkswagen's rollout is one of the largest named Copilot deployments Microsoft has disclosed. More than 330,000 employees now have Copilot, building on a base of 300,000-plus monthly active Copilot Chat users. The automaker is also using Work IQ, Microsoft's layer that grounds Copilot in organizational context such as documents, meetings and org structure.
Microsoft presented the deployment in a 'platform approach to becoming frontier' post, its framing for customers that adopt Copilot, Foundry and Copilot Studio together rather than buying point tools. The pitch is that enterprise value comes from shared data and identity across those layers, not from any single model.
The timing is about earnings. Benzinga-cited analysts see Copilot and Azure demand signaling stronger AI monetization across Azure, Foundry, Fabric and Copilot, with added upside from OpenAI revenue sharing tied to new GPT-6-family models. GPT-6.1 Terra also reached general availability in Foundry this week.
The skeptical read is the gap between seats and value. Large seat counts do not prove daily productive use, and Microsoft has faced persistent questions about Copilot engagement depth. The useful figure here is the 300,000+ monthly active Chat users, which suggests real usage. Watch Microsoft's earnings for Copilot seat disclosures and Azure AI growth rates.
