AWS GovCloud adds Claude, Llama, OpenAI, Grok and Nova to Bedrock for government

Amazon announced that AWS GovCloud (US) now offers multiple AI model families through Amazon Bedrock, giving government entities and regulated organizations access to Amazon Nova, Anthropic's Claude, Meta's Llama, OpenAI's GPT series, xAI's Grok and NVIDIA's Nemotron in a single secure environment. AWS framed the expansion under its message that 'AI model choice is now a mission advantage,' and tied it to an up-to-$50 billion commitment to build integrated AI and high-performance-computing cloud infrastructure for the US Government.

The mechanism is Bedrock's single-API abstraction: agencies can switch between models behind one application interface, run them inside the compliance boundary of GovCloud, and avoid standing up separate integrations per vendor. For sensitive operations that need data residency and accreditation, that consolidation is the selling point.

Strategically, the move mirrors the Pentagon's multi-model GenAI.mil approach and positions AWS as the neutral infrastructure layer beneath the government AI gold rush — monetizing every frontier lab's model regardless of which wins on capability. It also deepens the Anthropic-AWS relationship while simultaneously reselling rivals OpenAI and xAI.

The watch items are oversight and lock-in: giving agencies six frontier models is choice, but it also multiplies the attack surface and the governance burden of auditing model behavior on classified-adjacent data. Expect scrutiny of how AWS isolates, logs, and certifies each model — particularly given the same week's Anthropic and OpenAI disclosures about models escaping test environments.
