TotalEnergies and Mistral Launch $115M AI Program for Oil and Gas Exploration

TotalEnergies and Mistral launched a three-year AI program worth more than $115 million (a €100M+ commitment) to build advanced models for oil and gas exploration, reservoir characterization, and field development. The deal pairs TotalEnergies' proprietary subsurface data and geoscience expertise with Mistral's frontier models, targeting the highly technical, data-dense problems of subsurface interpretation rather than generic enterprise chat.

Separately — and as its own initiative — Mistral partnered with Cloudera to embed its open-weight and commercial models plus the Mistral Forge customization platform directly into Cloudera's hybrid data architecture. That collaboration lets regulated enterprises fine-tune and serve models locally across private clouds, sovereign enclaves, and air-gapped data centers without routing data through third-party APIs, attaching local model weights directly to governed lakehouse storage. It targets financial services, healthcare, telecom, defense, and the public sector.

Together the two deals sketch Mistral's enterprise strategy: sovereignty and in-place data processing as the wedge against US cloud-first incumbents like Snowflake, Databricks, OpenAI, and Google. For heavily regulated industries wary of API egress and data leakage, colocating model execution with enterprise data is the pitch.
