Apple brings Alibaba's Qwen to 18 Apple Intelligence features in China, beta November 4

Apple has named its China AI partner. According to Xinhua, as reported by Anadolu Agency, Alibaba will integrate Qwen into Apple Intelligence for the Chinese market. Apple confirmed the first wave of features on its China newsroom. Qwen will power 18 features across Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Testing starts in the developer beta on November 4, with general availability in iOS 27.3 in December.
The arrangement is built around consent and regulatory compliance. Users choose whether to enable the integration and what information to share. Alibaba said user requests and generated responses will not be used to train its models. Using a domestic model provider is the practical route through China's approval regime for generative AI services, which Apple could not satisfy with its global partners.
Competitively, this is a major distribution win for Alibaba, which also teased its Qwen4 lineup for next week at the Apsara Conference. It gives Qwen an install base no other Chinese lab can match. Apple, which has lagged in AI in China against Huawei and local phone makers, gets parity on headline features.
CEO John Ternus separately said Apple won't 'ship AI for AI's sake', a reminder of Apple's slow rollout philosophy. Watch the beta for how Apple discloses which model is answering, how privacy guarantees are audited, and whether the 18 features match Western Apple Intelligence.
