Mistral raises €3B led by Samsung at €21B valuation — Europe's largest tech round

Mistral raised €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in a Series D at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion — the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company, three years after the company's launch. Samsung Electronics led the round, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity, with Advent and BlackRock participating. The valuation nearly doubles Mistral's prior €11.7 billion mark.

Mistral framed the raise around sovereignty: it positions itself as 'the only AI company in the world building the full stack' — open-weight models, the infrastructure and compute they run on, and the products bringing them into production — so customers are 'never locked into a single vendor's roadmap, pricing or availability.' The round funds frontier research, expanded compute for training, and a push to build 1GW of European compute by 2030. Mistral now operates across 20 countries and supports 125+ enterprises including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.

Competitively, the Samsung tie-up is strategically dense: beyond leading the round, Samsung and Mistral announced a partnership for AI chip design and manufacturing — giving Mistral a potential hardware supply line independent of NVIDIA at the very moment NVIDIA is consolidating the ecosystem via Hugging Face. This makes sovereign AI a genuine business category rather than a policy talking point.

Mistral also deepened enterprise reach through a nine-figure Cloudera partnership, integrating its frontier models into Cloudera's hybrid data platform so enterprises can run agents on governed data without external data movement. The caveat: at €21B, Mistral is now priced for frontier-lab performance while competing against far better-capitalized US and Chinese rivals.
