xAI weighs collapsing seven Grok plans into four tiers as Team Bots enters public beta

India Today reports that xAI is considering an overhaul of its confusing pricing ladder. The seven current plans across Grok and X would become four: Free, Lite at $8 per month, a mid tier, and Ultra at $100 per month. Ultra would bundle Grok Bot, xAI's persistent agent runtime. Team Bots, which lets groups share and deploy bots, entered public beta on September 28.
The redesign follows a familiar pattern: put the agent behind the top tier and use the low tier to bring users in. Grok Bot enables continuous, tool-driven execution with Grok 4.7, the coding and reasoning model released September 21. Grok 4.7 scored 46.3% on CursorBench 4.0 and 71.0% on DeepSWE v1.1. It has a 500K-token context window and costs $2 input / $6 output per million tokens. It also became available on Amazon Bedrock on September 28, widening its enterprise reach.
The pricing move lands in a week when consumer AI pricing is the dominant developer complaint. OpenAI introduced a $500 Pro 500 tier, and HN threads accused it of a bait-and-switch for halving included usage on the $200 plan. A $100 Ultra tier with an agent included positions xAI as the cheaper agentic option. That could attract the same developers who are migrating to Claude Opus 5.5 over quota frustrations.
Caveats: the plan is reported as under consideration, not announced, and the mid tier's price and limits are unknown. xAI pricing has changed often. Watch for an official announcement, how X Premium bundling changes, and whether Team Bots pricing lands inside or above Ultra.
