AWS moves ~20 recently launched AI services into maintenance mode

The move is a striking admission that AWS over-shipped during the first agentic-AI wave. Roughly 20 services — Amazon Kendra, Q Business, Bedrock Agents Classic among them — are now in maintenance mode with no new sign-ups, though existing customers remain supported. The strategic logic is consolidation: AWS wants to funnel customers into broader, agent-centric successors like Bedrock AgentCore, Amazon Quick Suite, and Bedrock Knowledge Bases rather than a sprawl of overlapping point services.

Simultaneously AWS expanded that agentic stack: new Bedrock, Quick and Continuum services, Web Search on Bedrock AgentCore, and standardized Bedrock billing data in AWS Data Exports to simplify cost analysis. It also shipped aws-bench, an open-source benchmark measuring how accurately and efficiently AI agents complete real-world AWS tasks, and restored Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 to general availability on Bedrock after a temporary suspension. GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna also went generally available on Bedrock via the Responses API.

For early adopters, the pruning means migration work and some frustration — betting on a hyperscaler's brand-new AI service now carries deprecation risk on a two-year horizon. But it also reflects a maturing market: AWS is signaling that the agent platform, not individual bolt-on AI features, is the durable abstraction. The competitive read is that AWS is racing to make Bedrock AgentCore the default agent runtime before Microsoft Foundry and Google's stack lock in enterprise customers.
