Anthropic Folds Claude Chat and Cowork Into One Interface, Adds Document Tools

Anthropic is consolidating Claude's fragmented surface area into one interface, merging the conversational chat experience with Cowork, its agentic knowledge-work environment. Alongside the merge, Anthropic is launching new document and presentation creation tools and folding its visual work tool, Claude Design, directly into the main interface. The company frames the change as a response to user frustration over having to choose the right tool for each task.

Claude Code lead Boris Cherny laid out the logic: 'Claude Code showed that AI could do real work, not just answer questions… Cowork proved knowledge workers could do the same: hand Claude the brief, come back to finished work.' The consolidation extends that thesis — one Claude that spans coding, documents, presentations, and design rather than a menu of specialized modes.

The move mirrors an industry-wide pattern. Simon Willison drew the parallel to OpenAI renaming its Codex desktop app to 'ChatGPT,' noting 'everyone's racing to establish themselves as a general agent now.' OpenAI's ChatGPT Work, Google's Gemini surfaces, and xAI's Grok Build are all converging on the same 'one general agent' UX bet.
