Claude gets a Personal Finance beta that connects to bank accounts via Plaid

Personal Finance is Anthropic's first consumer feature that reads live financial data. US users on Pro, Max or Ultra can link accounts through Plaid, the bank-connectivity layer behind many fintech apps. Claude can then answer questions about transactions, budgets and cash flow using real data instead of uploaded spreadsheets.
Access flows through Plaid's standard OAuth-style linking. That means the bank credentials never pass to Anthropic, and Claude gets permissioned access to account data. The beta is US-only and limited to paid tiers, which narrows the regulatory exposure while Anthropic studies usage.
Competitively, this is catch-up. OpenAI shipped a comparable ChatGPT feature in May, and the two assistants are steadily converging on a consumer "life OS" pitch covering email, calendar, health and now money. For Anthropic, which has leaned toward enterprise and developers, it signals a more serious push into consumer subscriptions just ahead of its IPO.
The skeptical case centers on trust. The Verge notes that the move raises privacy questions. Community reaction repeated the debate that followed ChatGPT's launch: convenience versus handing an AI a full view of your bank activity. This lands the same week a highly upvoted HN thread criticized Claude Code over a report that it sends users' email addresses to websites. Watch for clear data-retention and training terms, how Anthropic handles errors in financial advice, and whether the beta expands beyond the US.
