xAI adds voice mode to Grok Bot powered by Grok Voice Think Fast 2.0

Grok Bot's new voice mode lets users interact by speaking rather than typing, built on Grok Voice Think Fast 2.0 (originally announced July 2026), which xAI says improves transcription accuracy and delivers faster conversational responses. The feature is rolling out across existing Grok platforms — desktop, iOS, and Android — bringing xAI into direct competition with Google's Gemini 3.8 Live and OpenAI's voice offerings in the increasingly crowded voice-agent space.

Separately, xAI announced cross-session memory for Grok Build, its terminal coding agent, which now records conventions, decisions, and project facts as markdown notes in the backend so the agent retains context across sessions. Developers welcomed the persistence, a feature that addresses a common friction in agentic coding where context resets between sessions.

Both moves extend Grok from a chat and social-media assistant toward a broader productivity and developer tool, following the industry's consolidation trend that Simon Willison flagged — 'everyone's racing to establish themselves as a general agent now.' Voice, in particular, is table stakes as Apple ships Siri AI, Google leads speech benchmarks, and OpenAI pushes Codex voice for road trips (Greg Brockman).
