Microsoft–OpenAI alliance restructured: Azure exclusivity ends, revenue share cut

Microsoft and OpenAI mutually unwound the exclusivity terms of their landmark partnership. OpenAI will still ship on Azure first but can now deploy on AWS and Google Cloud when Microsoft can't support a capability, while Microsoft has stopped paying OpenAI a revenue share. Microsoft retains 27% ownership and IP rights through 2032; OpenAI continues paying Microsoft a revenue share through 2030. Sam Altman framed the change on X as Microsoft remaining 'our primary cloud partner' while OpenAI gains the freedom to be multi-cloud.
