Samsung accelerates in-house humanoid robots and unveils in-store AI Promoter

Samsung broadened its AI ambitions into robotics and retail this week. On September 7 it announced it is building AI directly into robot design to accelerate an in-house humanoid robot push, citing a view that 'physical AI arrives faster than expected.' Rather than treating AI as a bolt-on to existing robot hardware, Samsung is framing the model and the mechanical design as co-developed — a nod to the embodied-AI thesis that Google DeepMind (Gemini Robotics), NVIDIA (Cosmos), and AWS (Strands Robots) are all pursuing.
Separately, at IFA 2026 on September 6, Samsung unveiled an 'AI Promoter,' an in-store retail assistant that compares products and makes recommendations to shoppers — a consumer-facing application of conversational AI aimed at Samsung's own retail footprint and, potentially, licensing to other retailers.
Together the announcements position Samsung as an AI player across three layers: silicon (reinforced this week by its Mistral semiconductor partnership and Series D lead), devices, and now physical AI. The humanoid push in particular places Samsung against a crowded field — Tesla's Optimus, Figure, Apptronik (powered by DeepMind's Gemini Robotics 2, covered earlier), and NVIDIA's robotics stack. Samsung's edge is manufacturing scale and vertical integration from chips to consumer distribution; its challenge is that it lacks a frontier foundation model of its own, which is likely why it is investing in Mistral and building customized models rather than competing head-on with OpenAI or Google on general intelligence. The skeptical read is that 'accelerating development' is not a shipped product, and humanoid robotics timelines have repeatedly slipped industry-wide. The AI Promoter is more concrete but narrow.
